william "bill" and flora williams family of oak hill

Volusia County
the williams familyFlora, Frank, & Perry appearing in the estate of John Dwight Sheldon of New Smyrna. Jane Murray Sheldon (of Florida DAR fame) was his wife. Note their value is more than that of their property (which was at what is now Old Fort Park in New Smyrna Beach). Union troops attacked shortly after John Sheldon's death and the estate was never settled before emanicipation. | FamilySearchLetters in the estate of Darias Ferris from William Gearing, Grandson of Flora, requesting records from the estate in regard to an earlier purchase and sale of Flora and her mother, Amy, ( prior to their ownership by the Sheldon's) We learn they were the slaves of Henry Hartley of Duval County. Henry Hartley being Flora's father. Hartley subsequently sold both Amy and Flora to Ferris & Palmer. It can be assumed that the Sheldon family purchased Amy and Flora from Palmer & Ferris, as John D Sheldon did a considerable amount of business with them. Pages 27-56 contain the probate record. | Familysearch 1850 Slave Schedule of John D Sheldon. We can assume that the 42 year old woman is Amy, and the 8 year old mulatto girl is Flora | National Archives1860 Slave schedule of John D Sheldon. Flora is the 18 year old mulatto female and Frank is the 5 month old child. Identity of the other slaves is unknow, but one can wonder if the 45 year old woman is Amy, Flora's mother. | National ArchivesWonderful presentation done by the New Smyrna Beach museum on the Jane Murray Sheldon and the Sheldon family. | Youtube1909 Obituary of William Williams. Date of birth is likely exagerated as it does not align with other records. Burial location is unknown, but it is widely believed he was buried at Saints cemetery in Oak Hill | July 13, 1909, the evening metropolis newspaper, jacksonville1900 Oak hill negro school census, showing attending Williams children. pages 337-338. | familysearchdeath certificates for lucien, john, and perry williams. they are buried in saints and sinners cemeteries in oak hillprior to using the surname "williams", bill was known as "Bill Scobie", changing his surname to williams after emaincipation. i have found many refrences to this name change in articles and books. here is one | miami dade public library archivesanother scobie surname mention. i am researching his likely tie to nathaniel c scobie, who was the overseer of the first lighthose in brevard county, and was known to deal in slaves.bill williams / bill scobie mentioned | The East Coast of Florida by John Milton Hawks | internet archivei have many more records on the williams family; land records, additional newspaper articles on bill's work as a hunting guide,....drop me an email and i would be happy to shareportrait believed to be flora | Ancestryphoto believed to be bill | national park service
